A Guide to Finding the Right Size for Your Home or Office

Choosing the perfect artwork for your home or office can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! Whether you're investing in original paintings or high-quality art prints, I’m here to simplify the process and ensure that you find the ideal piece for your space.
Common Questions From Collectors:
How do I choose the right piece of art for my space?
What size artwork works best for my wall?
What orientation should I choose for my art above the mantle, couch, or bed?
Will the colours and style of the art complement my existing decor?
As an artist who creates original paintings and custom commissions, I’ve helped many collectors make these decisions. Let me guide you through selecting the right art size and style for your space with my top tips.
1. Buy Art You Love: Follow Your Heart!
The most important factor when purchasing art is that you love it. Whether you’re investing in a unique original painting or a fine art print, choose artwork that resonates with you emotionally. Art has the power to inspire, evoke feelings, and transform a room. If you fall in love with a piece, it’s the right choice. Trust me, I’ve heard many people say, “I wish I had bought it before someone else did!”
2. Size Matters! Find the Right Dimensions
Choosing the correct size artwork is crucial for making your space feel cohesive. A common mistake is choosing art that’s too small for the wall, which can create a feeling of imbalance. To get the perfect size:
Measure your wall and aim for artwork that covers 60-75% of the wall space.
For artwork above furniture, like a sofa or bed, choose a piece that is about two-thirds the width of the furniture.
Use painter’s tape to mark out different sizes on the wall to visualize the piece before you commit.
3. Hang Art at the Right Height
To ensure your art is displayed beautifully, position the center at eye level (around 57-60 inches from the floor). For art above furniture, leave 6 to 12 inches of space between the bottom of the frame and the furniture to maintain a balanced look.
4. Single Artwork vs. Gallery Wall: What’s Your Style?
Gallery walls are an excellent way to display multiple pieces together. To create a cohesive gallery wall:
Stick to a consistent theme (landscapes, abstracts, etc.).
Leave 2 to 4 inches of space between frames for a balanced layout.
Arrange your gallery wall on the floor first to ensure harmony.
5. Match the Art to the Room’s Purpose
Different spaces in your home require different styles of artwork:
Living Room: Large statement pieces or an arranged gallery wall make a bold impact.
Bedroom: Soft, calming artwork, ideally 36-48 inches wide, works best above the bed.
Dining Room: Medium to large art pieces can enhance the room’s ambiance.
Hallways & Entryways: A mix of vertical and horizontal pieces creates visual interest.
6. When in Doubt, Go Bigger!
If you’re unsure about the size of your artwork, always lean toward larger pieces. Bigger artwork makes a bold statement and can tie a room together. If a large piece isn’t an option, consider grouping smaller works together to create balance.
